Throughout Canada, there are numerous statues erected to commemorate Sir John A Macdonald as the first Prime Minister of Canada. Having a pivotal role in the formation of our country, Sir John A Macdonald was instrumental in uniting the British colonies then and forming the government.

Despite these achievements in Canadian history, Sir John A Macdonald was involved in acts and organized plans that were detrimental to the Indigenous peoples of Canada. This included systemic starvation, forcing people from their established homes onto reserves, and the creation of residential schools.

Now in modern times, we as a society must reflect on these statues; what they stand for, and what part of history they are representing.

The goal of this project is to educate and explain Macdonald’s involvement in the acts against Indigenous people, and how this should be reflected in the statues residing in Ontario moving forward.
